Telecommuting is not a new idea and while most people are aware of the rise in popularity during the 80′s, it’s been around a lot longer than that. The first telecommuter on record was a Boston bank president who, in 1877, arranged to have a phone line strung from his office to his home in Somerville, Mass. Nearly a century later, in 1973, rocket scientist Jack Nilles had endured Los Angeles gridlock one too many times. Fed up with his commute to and from a NASA satellite communications project, Nilles moved his work home, and modern “telecommuting” was born. The terms telecommuting and telework were coined by Nilles.

Fast forward to the present and we have another evolvement in telecommuting: Extreme telecommuting.

Anthony Page, The Working Nomad

In an article at Web 2.0, we meet Anthony Page, a web developer who after having his job in London outsourced to India decided to take his work on the road. He traveled for nearly a year before landing on Malaysia’s tiny Perhentian Kecil Island. “There’s always an Internet connection somewhere, even in the poorest, most desperate country,” he says. “Ten years ago, there’s no way this would have worked. Now there are hardly any barriers.”

One of his websites, WorkingNomad.com is a site for people who work from the road. The tagline is “Never trade your own freedom for money”. I couldn’t agree more. His blog chronicles his travels starting in 2005 when he first left his job to travel overseas. He also offers an eBook, “How I Did It” that tells you how you can make an income publishing websites. I’m going to purchase the book and I’ll be posting a review, so keep your eyes out for that.

I have got to get a new laptop!
